Studio

Over fifteen years building pieces that answer back.

Light Notes is a small studio based in Spain. We work at the crossroads of light, real-time programming and physical space. Every commission starts with a specific problem in a specific room.

We started in 2010 doing technical work for events and clubs, and in 2013 began making our own pieces — back when it wasn't obvious you could make a living from this. Over fifteen years later we still take the same kind of work: commissions that force you to solve something before showing it.

We don't work from templates. Every install has its own hardware, its own calibration and its own content logic. We write code in TouchDesigner, put together electronics when we need to, and only buy hardware we can reuse later.

We like working with serious technical teams — set, lighting, sound, architecture. When a project looks right it's because the whole production has been coordinated well; our work is one layer inside that.

How we work

  1. 01

    Listen

Before we draw anything we ask: how many people go through, what light is there, what should the visitor take away. Most design decisions are taken here.

  2. 02

    Prototype

We put together a small version with the sensors and software we plan to ship. It lets us test hypotheses and show it to the client before ordering hardware.

  3. 03

    Build

It gets manufactured, wired and installed on site. We work with local suppliers for structure, lighting and sound when the project calls for it.

  4. 04

    Tune

Event day is never the same as rehearsal. Most of our shift is spent calibrating cameras, timings and levels so the install runs with a real audience.

The studio

Light Notes is led by Javier Álvarez, digital artist and visual programmer. We work with a stable network of collaborators for structure, lighting, set and sound depending on the project. We're the Resolume dealer in Spain and run technical training when it fits.
